When to Fly Flags at Half-Staff
Many elected officials have called MTA regarding when to lower the flag at half-staff (or half-mast) and other types of
flag etiquette. A lot of flag information is available online and below are a few links to helpful information on
displaying the United States flag. When a member of the armed services from Michigan is killed in action, the governor
will issue a press release with information about the individual(s) and the day that has been designated for flags to
be lowered in his or her honor.
Whenever the governor orders the Michigan and U.S. flags at half-mast or half-staff, a press release comes from
her office stating so. The governor's press releases can be obtained through e-mail by registering your e-mail
address with her office. To sign up for the press releases and other electronic information, click
**HERE**.
In Proclamation No. 2003-4, signed by Governor Granholm, U.S. flags are ordered lowered to half-staff throughout the
state of Michigan and to half-mast on Michigan waters whenever one of Michigan's own is killed in the line of duty.
